Flood Irrigation in Winter

March 13, 2019|Written by Gill

While we have been getting some precipitation lately in the Middle Rio Grande Valley and throughout New Mexico...the perennial question remains: How much water should be applied to vines during dormancy? Many growers thoroughly water once a month. Anecdotally, that approach appears to work, but questions that merit research remain. How much water? When should it be applied? What are the prevailing vineyard conditions that affect the irrigation question? What are the varieties and production goals? What is the water holding capacity of the vineyard soil? What were the recent climatic conditions? How old are the vines and what is their status? How dry was the previous fall?. Many questions, that if answered would lead to more efficient and effective irrigation. Especially here in the arid southwest.
