Veraison moves north....

Veraison, is the beginning of grape maturation when the grape berries begin to soften, change color, increase sugar % and form the aroma and flavor compounds found in juice and/or wine.  Notice that not all berries within a cluster change color at the same time...this phenomenon is referred to as "asynchronous ripening".

Finally, notice the yellow specks or spots on the leaves in the upper photograph of the Pinot noir? It appears the insect pests, leafhoppers (most likely the Western grape leafhopper, Erythroneura elegantula), a perennial pest of grapevines in New Mexico this time of year, have made their appearance. When scouting for them...look on the underside of the leaves.
